Memory & Forgetfulness – Assessment in Zurich

When names, appointments or words go missing more often, it’s worth a closer look. We carefully assess forgetfulness, brain fog and early signs of cognitive change – and speak openly about dementia prevention.

More Than Just Memory

Cognitive health encompasses all aspects of your mental performance: attention, memory, processing speed, decision-making and emotional regulation. At VitalNeuro, we look at these functions holistically – taking into account their connection to physical health and lifestyle.

Understanding and Treating Brain Fog

“Brain fog” is not a diagnosis, but it is a symptom to be taken seriously. People describe it as dulled thinking, concentration problems, word-finding difficulties, or the feeling of thinking “through cotton wool.”

Brain fog always has a cause – often several. We systematically get to the bottom of these causes rather than just treating symptoms.

Common Causes of Brain Fog

  • Chronic stress and cortisol dysregulation
  • Sleep disorders and poor sleep quality
  • Hormonal changes (thyroid, sex hormones)
  • Micronutrient deficiencies (B12, iron, vitamin D)
  • Inflammatory processes and gut health
  • Undiagnosed ADHD or depression
  • Post-viral syndromes

Evidence-Based Care

The U.S. POINTER study (a two-year randomized clinical trial) showed that a structured lifestyle intervention led to measurable improvements in brain function.

Lifestyle as a Modifiable Risk Factor

Cognitive decline is not an inevitable part of aging. Targeted lifestyle interventions can slow neurodegenerative developments.

Success of Holistic Measures

Simultaneously adjusting physical activity, dietary habits, cognitive stimulation, social participation, and vascular and metabolic monitoring shows significantly greater effectiveness than individual measures alone.

Cognitive Outcomes

Participants in structured programs showed statistically significant improvements over two years in episodic memory, executive function, and overall cognitive performance compared to control groups.

Frequently Asked Questions About Memory Assessment

When should I have forgetfulness assessed?

If memory problems increase over weeks, become noticeable in daily life or work, are noticed by family members, or are accompanied by word-finding difficulties and orientation problems, an assessment is advisable. Even in cases of significant uncertainty without a clear finding, an objective evaluation can be worthwhile.

How does a neuropsychological memory assessment work?

After a detailed initial consultation including history-taking , a standardized assessment of memory, attention, language and executive function follows (approx. 2–3 hours). If needed, we add lab and imaging results. You then receive a feedback session with a written report and concrete recommendations.

Does forgetfulness automatically mean dementia?

No. Common causes include lack of sleep, stress, depression, thyroid or vitamin deficiencies, medication effects, and undiagnosed ADHD. This is exactly why differential diagnosis is so important: many causes are treatable.

Does health insurance cover the memory assessment?

With a medical indication and physician’s prescription, the neuropsychological assessment is usually billed through mandatory basic insurance (OKP). In cases of accident-related conditions, accident, disability or military insurance covers it. We inform you transparently about cost coverage before the assessment.
